What I Love About Private Hockey So Far
Over the last few months, since stepping into the world of private hockey under nine, I’ve had the chance to talk to countless families, coaches, and players. While there are plenty of debates about the pros and cons of both public and private hockey, what often gets overlooked is what people truly love about private hockey. That’s what I want to focus on today.
I made the decision to become involved in private hockey to give certain players and families an opportunity to play at a higher level. While I still have deep ties to public hockey (GO RAMS), my experiences in private hockey so far have been eye-opening, and there are several aspects that I’ve really come to appreciate.
The Best Aspects of Private Hockey
Full-Ice Play – One of the biggest advantages of private hockey is that kids get to play on a full sheet of ice from an early age. This allows them to develop skating, positioning, and awareness in a way that translates directly to higher levels of hockey.
Full 5v5 Game Format – Private hockey follows the traditional 5-on-5 game format with complete rules, structured positions, and referees enforcing the game properly. This structured approach prepares players for competitive hockey as they advance.
Competitive Environment – Private hockey appreciates competition as long as it is fun. Scores and standings are kept, which teaches players the valuable lessons of winning and losing, resilience, and teamwork. Some families believe this is an essential part of player development and personal growth.
Same-Age Competition – In private hockey, players compete within their exact birth year, rather than in combined age groups. This creates a level playing field, where kids are similar in size and skill level, leading to a safer and more balanced competitive environment.
Elite Coaching – Many private hockey programs are led by former professional players and high-level coaches. The level of instruction is often more advanced, focusing on higher-level skill development, strategy, and hockey IQ.
More Ice Time – One of the biggest benefits of private hockey is the increased ice time. Private hockey typically offers around twice the amount of ice time per week compared to public hockey, which allows players to develop their skills at a faster pace and gain more experience in game situations. Most programs also have the addition of fun dryland, healthy eating and other off ice experiences.
Like-Minded Teammates – Because private hockey often attracts families and players who are highly dedicated to the sport, players are surrounded by teammates who share a similar passion and work ethic. This fosters a competitive yet supportive team environment that pushes everyone to improve.
Why It’s Been a Great Experience So Far
What I love about private hockey is the opportunity it provides for players who are looking for a more competitive and structured development path. The focus on skill-building, high-quality coaching, and competitive gameplay creates an environment where players can truly excel.
That being said, I still recognize that every family and player has unique needs, and private hockey isn’t the right fit for everyone. But for those who are looking for more ice time, a competitive atmosphere, and a structured game format, private hockey can be an amazing option.
Regardless of the path a player takes, one thing remains the same: the love of the game. And at the end of the day, that’s what matters most.
